GO Places in Harrogate

Places to Go in Harrogate There’s plenty of stately homes and places of historical interest to visit during your stay in Harrogate, giving you plenty of opportunity to enjoy the beautiful surrounding countryside.

One of the area’s most impressive stately homes is Newby Hall [map], nr Ripon, which is a superb example of 17th century Adam architecture and houses many treasures. Newby Hall currently is the home of Mr and Mrs Richard Compton and was once featured in a BBC documentary as the house was designed by Robert Adam and built in the style of Sir Christopher Wren.

Children will find a visit here particularly enjoyable as they can have fun in the Adventure Garden which includes a paddling pool, sandpit, swings, climbing frames, bridges, an aerial slide and pedalo boats. Of course, the miniature railway will appeal to children and adults alike.

Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden [map], nr Ripon, is situated on the banks of the River Skell. The Abbey ruins provide a stunning backdrop for the 18th century landscaped gardens of Studley Royal and this is one of the few surviving examples of a Georgian Green Garden [map], complete with lakes, ponds, temples, statues, bridges and cascades.

Visitors can enjoy a wealth of sights here including the Medieval wild deer park with more than 500 deer and more than 10 historical buildings including temples, statues, follies, and cascades.

Another interesting place to visit is Norton Conyers, Wath, Nr Ripon, which is a late medieval house with Stuart and Georgian additions and has been home to the Lord Grahams since 1624.

Bronte fans will particularly enjoy a visit here as Norton Conyers is said to be the original inspiration for Thornfield Hall, the imposing building featured in Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte.
