GO Sport in Edinburgh

Sport in Edinburgh As with most of the UK, football plays a significant part in the capital’s life with three main football clubs nestled in the city however rugby, golf and hill walking also take a high priority.

Edinburgh is the home of Scottish Rugby with the Murrayfield [map] stadium beating at its heart. However, as well as the national team Edinburgh is also host to a number of domestic clubs who play in both the Celtic League and the European Heineken Cup.

The national stadium is also home to an American football side. Since 1995 it has been the official base for the European National Football League side the Scottish Claymores.

If, however you are looking to ‘get physical’ yourself there is a wide range of activities to try. Edinburgh City Council operate a number of sports centres the biggest of which is Meadowbank [map], which has twice played host to the Commonwealth Games but is open for public use for swimming, racquet sports and more. There’s also Craiglockhart Sports Center [map], which boasts a boating pond and excellent tennis facilities.

For those wishing follow the Scots' Winter Olympic success in 2002, Murrayfield Ice Rink has curling as well as ice skating and is also the home of the ice hockey club, the Murrayfield Racers.

Just beyond the city boundary you can find both steeple and regular horse racing at Musselburgh. Two of the venue's biggest events are the Scottish Sprint Cup in May and Lady’s Day in September.

But if high-speed action is more your style then Knockhill racing circuit should bring a smile to your face. The national circuit plays host to the British Touring Cars, Superbikes and Rallycross all just 40 minutes away from the centre of Edinburgh.
