Museums in Edinburgh
Edinburgh’s very streets ring out with the sounds
of the past and there’s some excellent museums in
the area. A visit to Edinburgh wouldn’t be complete
without a stroll along The Royal Mile and this
is home to some of the very best museums too.
If you want to relive your past take a wander down memory
lane at The Museum of Childhood [map],
High Street, The Royal Mile. Here you’ll be able
to see exhibitions on toys, trains, dress and social activities concerning childhood across the ages.
Edinburgh seems to stir up a wealth of literary talent.
If you feel inspired to wax lyrical be sure to pop into The Writers Museum [map],
The Royal Mile. This is the place to read about Edinburgh’s
rich literary heritage.
One of Edinburgh’s most comprehensive museums is The Museum of Edinburgh [map]. Located at Canongate on
The Royal Mile this is a spectacular museum painting a
vivid and rich story of the people and places that make
Edinburgh the lively place it is today. The museum has
a programme of constantly changing exhibitions and has
recently featured the story of Mak Merry Pottery and its close links to the Edinburgh suffragette movement.
Those with an interest in aviation will be delighted to
discover The Museum of Flight [map] in East Lothian. This enormous museum is located in two
massive hangers and here you’ll enjoy a variety
of displays and exhibitions concentrating on aeroplanes and accessories from the two world wars as well as those
used in peace time by the RAF.
Discover how grim life was for the Scottish miners with
a visit to The Scottish Mining Museum [map],
Newtongrange. The popular visitor centre gives members
of the public the chance to see how coal is created and
extracted from the ground and to hear first hand what
life was like for the miners.
Scare yourself silly with a visit to The Edinburgh
Dungeons [map], on Market Street, next to Waverley Bridge.
This is the sister museum to The London Dungeons and you can expect the same gruesome ghosties and tales
of a haunted history. Definitely not recommended for those
of a nervous disposition.
