GO Rugby in Cardiff

Rugby in Cardiff Since the opening of the Millennium Stadium [map] – the new spiritual home of Welsh sport – in 1999 Cardiff has established itself as one of Europe's leading sporting event hosts.

The stadium (CF10 1GE) plays host to a number of top rugby union and league fixtures each year, including the Autumn International Test Matches, the RBS Six Nations Tournament and Rugby League's Premier Challenge Cup final. But if you want to see the best in Welsh rugby union on a more intimate scale why not check out a Cardiff Blues game.

The club, previously known as Cardiff Rugby Football Club, was founded in 1876 and played its first game at Sophia Gardens before relocating to its famous ground at Cardiff Arms Park [map], where the team still plays today.

Over the years Cardiff have beaten South Africa and New Zealand, and have never lost to Australia. While at club level they were crowned Welsh League Champions in 1994-95 and won the Welsh Cup in 1981, 1982, 1984, 1986, 1987, 1994 and 1997. The team also reached the final of the European Cup in its inaugural year of 1995-96 and have since been semi-finalists and quarter-finalists.

During its 128-year history, Cardiff has supplied more players for the Wales national side than any other club, and a succession of Cardiff captains have led their country.

The club’s highest win was 116-0 against Dunvant on 25th March 2000, beating the previous high of 107-3 against Plymouth in 1993. And the club’s top try scorer is Steve Ford with 187 tries.

These days Cardiff Blues play in the Celtic League against the likes of the Ospreys, Munster, Leinster and Edinburgh Rugby. The also play in the Heineken Cup against the best rugby clubs in Europe.

If you prefer rugby league then you’ll probably want to be cheering on the Cardiff Demons RLFC during your visit to the city. The team, which plays its home games at local rugby union club Taffs Well RFC, is in the Rugby League Conference Division and plays against clubs from all over the south west Wales.
