GO Universities in Bristol

Universities in Bristol Bristol has a solid reputation as a seat of learning and with two universities under its belt – the University of Bristol and the University of The West Of England – it’s no surprise that there’s a vibrant student community here.

The University of Bristol began life in 1876 as the University College of Bristol, and attained university status in 1909. It has a special place in British university history for being the first seat of learning to admit men and women on an equal footing.

Academically, it is now one of the most highly performing universities in the country and is based in and around Clifton, an attractive and upmarket district near the city centre.

The university’s main academic courses have excellent reputations, and in particular teaching on maths, geography, anatomy and pharmacology is particularly strong. Engineering is also one of the universities’ strengths and a new laboratory opened quite recently to support dynamics engineering.

There are two sets of halls, one in the beautiful Georgian area of Clifton and the other is in Stoke Bishop, which is just under two miles away from the University in North Bristol.

The University of West England became into being in 1992 when the old Bristol Polytechnic changed its name.

Business management and administration is the most successful study area here but the student media at UWE is particularly strong, and students develop their own websites and also put together their own digital magazine.
