GO ARt Galleries In Blackpool

Art Galleries in Blackpool Although the town is indeed a British tourist’s dream, there are still a few entertainment areas that are lacking and Blackpool is only home to one art gallery.

However, there are plenty of temporary exhibitions on during the summer months on the North Pier, the most recent being the George Formby Centenary Exhibitions, which celebrated the 100th Anniversary of the film and singing legend’s birth.

But if you’re looking for an all-year-round display of art then head to the Grundy Art Gallery [map], situated near the Blackpool Central Library on Queen Street . Recognised as one of the best small galleries in the country, this building was purpose-built in 1911 to provide a place of peace and tranquillity amidst the hustle and bustle of Blackpool.

The gallery houses a large collection of oils and watercolours, modern British paintings, prints, and Oriental ivories, which was started by the brothers, Cuthbert and John Grundy. During their lifetime, the brothers collected many paintings and in 1903 they requested that the paintings should be given to the people of Blackpool.

Since then the collection has grown considerable with ceramics and old photographs of the town, among the many delights you’ll find in the gallery now. There are also plenty of special exhibitions by both local and national artists throughout the year.

If you head down to the South Promenade, you’ll find another permanent display of contemporary art in the form of the Great Promenade Show [map]. This is an outdoor exhibition of sculptures, constructions and lighting by some of the UK's leading artists and designers. It is certainly the place to go to be inspired, particularly after dark when the features are lit up and take on new dimensions.
